Current Wisconsin insurance issues as of February 2010
Wisconsin insurance issues of affordability and availability defy classification given the non-partisan nature of the state's politics.
I don't know how to peg Wisconsin. It's in the midwest, it's very German, and they make beer, but it's difficult to peg it as progressive or conservative. Seems to be one of those states that could be either way depending upon the issue, so I don't have preconceived notions about how they rank on various issues. What's not too surprising given the number of breweries in the state is that it ranks at the bottom of the country in binge drinking. It also ranks at the bottom in public health funding which is curious given that it ranks just out of the top ten in percentage of insured residents. Perhaps this is an intended result of their Badgercare which is meant to make affordable care available to most Wisconsin residents, especially the children. Even so, the state's residents face future concerns with their premiums rising 74.9 percent over 2000 to 2007 and median earnings increasing 15.5 percent over the same time period. Perhaps those concerns contributed to the prevalence of drinking in this state.
