West Virginia health insurance:
West Virginia residents received good news from Senator Rockefeller in May of 2009 by providing his support of a new Public Health Insurance Plan. He was thanked by the West Virginia Health Care for America Now Coalition. The Public Plan maintains strong competition with the private insurance companies, and is able to provide affordable health care to the residents who can't afford the private companies' plans.
West Virginia also maintains a high risk pool called AccessWV. It is offered to residents who cannot get private health insurance, and who are also eligible for HIPAA. Qualifications include being a West Virginia resident for at least 30 days, however, you cannot be turned down because of a pre-existing condition.
West Virginia Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)is also available for families within certain income guidelines who just need coverage for their children.
As with all states, West Virginia also has Medicaid.
If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health insurance alternatives, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
