Vermont health insurance alternatives:
With the rising costs of health care and so many employers not providing their employees with health care benefits, finding affordable health care is a priority with residents of any state.
Vermont insurers are required to provide coverage for anyone regardless of pre-existing medical coverage. They are not required, though, to limit premiums, so this may be an expensive option.
Vermont though, is somewhat more progressive in the type of health coverage they offer through state programs. Three types of coverage are offered under an umbrella program called Green Mountain Care. Catamount Health functions as a state insurance risk pool for those who are medically uninsurable elsewhere. This Vermont Access Health Plan, adminstered separately from the state's Medicaid program, is available for low-income applicants within certain guidelines. Dr. Dynasaur is a very affordable plan for the children of families that tend to fall between being able to afford tight coverage and making too much for Medicaid.
If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health insurance alternatives, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
