Utah health insurance alternatives:

During these tough economic times, health insurance seems to be a rare commodity. There are alternatives out there if you know where to look. One of the first places that you might look to is that actual state of Utah, which offers some options.

One option is the state health insurance risk pool, which is designed to provide coverage for those considered medically uninsurable. This pool is open to those considered HIPAA-eligible which means that you have exhausted all of your COBRA benefits and have had creditable coverage for 18 months.

Another available option is the Utah Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Most states have programs like this and they tend to be for the children of families that are between being able to afford private insurance and making too much for Medicaid. Utah also has Medicaid as do all other states for low-income applicants.

Often times, supplemental healthcare coverage might be a better option in the long run. Although these programs are not insurance, they do offer many benefits that traditional insurance does not. For instance, a company called AmeriPlan offers discounted healthcare coverage reguardless of age, pre-existing condition, etc. Their plans start out at around $14.95 per person, or $19.95 per household. A household would include anyone living at your address up to 20 people. Traditional insurance requires them to be related. AmeriPlan will cover up to 80% on any procedure done by a dentist, medical doctor, and chiropractor. They also cover many specialists as well as pharmaceuticals.

If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health insurance alternatives, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
