Texas health insurance alternatives:

Many people are struggling these days to afford health insurance coverage for their families. In Texas especially this is a problem, given that it has the highest percentage of uninsured residents in this country, as of this writing. Anyone who is having difficulty obtaining coverage or who has been designated uninsurable should consider looking into the following options:

- Texas offers Medicaid Program for low-income individuals

- Texas Health Insurance High Risk Pool designed to help high risk individuals acquire health insurance through a State Insurance Program. There are some restrictions regarding pre-existing conditions in this plan.

- Texas Children's Health Insurance Program is designed for children who do not meet the requirements of Medicaid, but who need health insurance.

You should explore all of the options if you are not able to obtain coverage through an employer. Even you currently have group coverage, you may want to be aware of your options should the economy affect your status.

If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health coverage alternatives, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
