Current South Dakota insurance issues as of February 2010

South Dakota insurance affordability and availability issues are set against a pristine natural setting which positively influences the health rankings for this state.

To be honest with you, I don't hear a lot about South Dakota in the news. The last general news article that I remember reading about this state is its increasing population of mountain lions in the state. Hmmm, I wonder how that figures into the state's health statistics? Maybe not much at this point because the state figures to be slightly healthier than average according to the United Health Foundation. It ranks 6th in air pollution, which is not surprising because you don't think about sprawl, refineries or traffic gridlock when you think of South Dakota. It ranks 7th in infectious disease, 5th in violent crime and 6th in high school graduation. Its bad rankings are not too bad, thirty-seventh in prevalence of binge drinking, 35th in prevalence of obesity and 33rd in occupational fatalities. Since there's no ranking of wildlife-related injuries, it's difficult to tell what those mountain lions are up to. The fortunate thing for them is that they don't have to work for a living, because if they did so, they would find their health care premiums rising much faster than their earnings in this state, as other South Dakota residents are seeing, according to Familiesusa.org. It would probably be much easier fo them to stick to killing elk and avoiding hunters.
