Current South Carolina insurance issues as of February 2010
South Carolina insurance issues of affordability and availability are unsurprising given the dysfunction portrayed by this state's politician in the national media.
South Carolina is my home state, but I must admit that it hasn't represented itself well in the media recently. From outlandish statements by politicians to a lack of discretion and judgment from its governor, it comes across seemingly as some time of hillbilly mess. Unfortunately, this backwards leadership has had a predictable effect on South Carolina and it trails the nation in many health rankings. It ranks at the bottom of the country in violent crime, 42nd in infectious disease, 45th in prevalence of obesity, 48th in high school graduation, 47th in infant mortality and 46th and premature death. The rankings are impressively bad. The lone bright spots are a low prevalence of binge drinking, high immunization coverage and a dropping rate of death from cardiovascular disease. Additional hope could be provided by a proposed nearly 800 billion dollars set aside to cover the state's uninsured children. With a new governor, it would be interesting to see how the state could improve even further.
