Current Rhode Island insurance issues as of February 2010
Rhode Island insurance issues of affordability and availability have pretty much been resolved by imaginative state healthcare legislation.
This state has more and more in recent times been thought of a place with a very high cost of living. It seems that whenever you have one of these articles that ranks cost of living by location, you always have a mention of Rhode Island or Providence. When a place has such a reputation for a high cost of living, intuitively, you would think that would translate over into health care costs and result in poor health statistics, especially since Rhode Island does not offer a risk pool for the uninsurable. Interestingly enough, Rhode Island residents do pretty well, with the state ranking number ten of the top ten states with most insured residents. The state also ranks fourth in prevalence of obesity, third in primary care physicians and ninth in violent crime. The state government has several strategies designed to cover most of residents and they seem to be highly effective. However, it won't necessarily always be good news for Rhode Island. A recent study projects that as much 5000 Rhode Islanders have been losing coverage since 2008. It will be interested to see how the increasing number of uninsured affects Rhode Island's population in the future given the state's high cost of living.
