Current Puerto Rico insurance issues as of February 2010

Puerto Rico insurance issues of affordability and availability are currently non-existent due to a government program, but there are ominous signs that they may return in the future.

Did you know that the life expectancy of Puerto Rico is higher than that of the United States? They have a program called Puerto Rico Health Reform which was launched in 1993 as a combination of a privatized health sytem and government-sponsored health coverage. It covers half of the population and has done so effectively up until now. Some of Puerto Rico's health statistics as compared with American states include the best rates for asthma (or lack of) in the U.S., 2nd best rate of HIV death, and 2nd best rate for diabetes. However, given that they have the worst rankings in area of physical exercise, tobacco use and near worst rates for cholesterol, alcohol consumption and fruit and vegetable consumptions is testimony to the fact that this is more about the healthcare system than a healthy lifestyle. Given that Puerto Rico Health Reform is facing some financial difficulties, it will be interesting to see if health habits change in the future.
