Current Oklahoma insurance issues as of February 2010
Oklahoma insurance issues of availability and affordability are predictable given the historic low cultural emphasis on health living in the state.
I've lived in Oklahoma. I don't have to do much research for this. I know it's not a healthy state. If you were a traveling wheatgrass salesman, you might want to avoid Oklahoma. Ditto, if you were a vegan PETA activitist looking to open new chapters. Want a fat, juicy burger followed by a half-gallon milkshake? I've got a few Oklahoma spots in mind. My hunches are also borne out by the statistics. 46th in prevalence of smoking and obesity, 49th in primary care physicians, 48th in cardiovascular deaths, 43rd in premature deaths, 45th in preventable hospitalizations and 41st for impoverished children. A recent report finds that 1.1 million Oklahomans were uninsured at some point in 2007 and 2008. That amounts to more than half of the part of the state population that make under twice the poverty level. This was a the focus of some legislation and unsuprisingly, remains a major state issue at this time.
