Current North Carolina insurance issues as of February 2010
North Carolina insurance issues of availability and affordability are uniquely affected by the detrimental effects of their historic cash crop.
My mother is from North Carolina, so I think I'm pretty familiar with the culture of the state. This is a state built on tobacco. Tobacco has created jobs and made quite a few people wealthy here. It's interesting to think about a which type of health coverage would be offered in a state whose historical cash crop has a strong reputation for causing cancer. The best answer is not great but improving. The percentage of uninsured in the state decreased slightly in 2009, the percentage of children in poverty has gone down. Most notably, the prevalence of smoking has dropped by about ten percent in this state. Remaining problems include being ranked 40th in the country for cancer deaths, 44th in the country for infant mortality and 41st in the country for prevalence of obesity. While lifestyle change is the obvious solution for some of the problems, it remains to been if other fixes are coming in the form of a health care overhaul.
