New Mexico health insurance alternatives:

New Mexico has some state-sponsored programs that might provide solutions for your health coverage needs.

New Mexico Medical Insurance Pool (NMMIP)is designed for HIPAA-eligible applicants who would have trouble getting coverage because of pre-existing medical conditions. HIPAA-eligible means that you have exhausted any remaining COBRA benefits that you might have and that you have had 18 months of creditable coverage with a the last day of that coverage from a group plan. New Mexico's insurance pool may not be the cheapest solution, but for some it may be the only solution.

The New MexiKids - the State Children's Health Insurance Program is designed to provide highly affordable health coverage for children under the age of 19 for families within certain income guidelines.

It may also be useful to know that there are several low-cost or free clinics within the state of New Mexico in which you can find affordable health care.New Mexico has a substantial Native-American population and the state offers free health care to any Native American resident. You are automatically accepted for coverage with Medicaid which can be used at Native American health places such as First Nation, SIPI and the Indian Hospital. Low-income families of any ethnicity may apply for UNM Care which provides healthcare services at various clinics for free or low out-of-pocket payments. With UNM Care,financially-eligible Bernalillo county residents can obtain healthcare, dental and pediatric services. There are First Choice Community Healthcare clinics that cooperate with this program. The YWCA also works with healthcare providers to provide struggling women with low-cost heart and health examinations and blood tests.

If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health insurance alternatives, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
