It’s an alternative for those who can’t afford or do not have medical coverage. Applicants are walked through a step-by-step process to determine if they or their families qualify for free or affordable coverage. The New Jersey Family Care website also offers a multilingual support link. So, if you live in New Jersey and you or your family needs help with health care cost or coverage, this is an option.
This state also provides a risk pool for applicants who cannot get private coverage because of a pre-existing risk pool. The program is called the Individual Health Coverage (IHC) Program. This won't necessarily be cheap and should be consider a last resort.
If you cannot afford any private coverage, you should consider Medicaid which is available for low-income families in all states.
If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health insurance alternative, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
