Current Minnesota insurance issues as of February 2010
Minnesota insurance affordability and availability issues seem to fit the status quo for the rest of the nation.
This large state does not necessarily have the worst statistics in terms of uninsured residents but it was not unscathed by the recession either. In 2009, it's rate of total uninsured hit 9.1 percent, which is not the worst in the country, but fewer is always better. At the same time, the total number of uninsureds have risen to near 500,000. These numbers could be a snapshot for many large states across the country. What is somewhat alarming are the reasons behind the decline in numbers of residents of this state who received health coverage from employers. According to an extensive telephone poll, it was because the coverage became too expensive or that it was no longer offered. That should be sobering to hear for anyone in the country. Otherwise, the uninsured fall along similar categories as other states, with whites making up the largest group and minorities more likely to be uninsured than non-minorities.
