Current Maryland insurance issues as of February 2010
Maryland insurance affordability and availability issues are like a cookie-cutter example of the challenges facing the nation.
There's no remarkable statistics to share about Maryland. It's a small state without the eye-popping numbers of uninsured that might get your attention like other larger states. About 600,000 Maryland residents do not have health insurance and that's about 13 percent of the population. As in other states, these people are from working-class families and vulnerable groups such as the elderly or young. Minorities tend to be uninsured more often than not. Premiums for private coverage are too high for many. These numbers and situations are typical for a lot of states. Where the major concern is here is for the future. Federal health care reform could make health coverage accessible or affordable for almost a million people in this state. There's not so much the concern for the health care situation getting out of control here but rather a hope for great improvement.
