Current Iowa insurance issues as of February 2010

Iowa insurance affordability and availability issues are a study in contrasts.

This state is a mixed bag when it comes to health care. It does very well in some areas, but strikingly bad in others. Iowa ranked 15th in a 2009 ranking of healthiest states. It is second in the country only to Utah in low infant mortality rates. Sounds wonderful, huh? On the flip side, only two states had a worse prevalence of binge drinking and this state ranks 47th in terms of access to health care providers to primary care physicians. This example shows that health care can improve every where, even in states that have demonstrated success. One area that needs to be addressed is the growing rate of uninsured children. Congress attempted to pass legislation authorizing State Children’s Health Insurance Program, which would have expanded coverage to more children in that state, but that was vetoed under the prior Presidential Administration.
