Current Idaho insurance issues as of February 2010

Idaho insurance affordability and availability issues while increasingly serious, may be overlooked by a wave of political demagoguery.

Idaho recently passed something called the "Health Freedom Act". This act is design to counter the mandate for Idahoans to purchase health coverage which may occur under national health care reform. Whenever I hear about legislation with the word "freedom" in it, I have to be cautious. Sometimes that type of legislation pretends to look out for the average American when its genuine intention is to take advantage of the average American. Given some of Idaho's growing health care woes that could be suspected in this case. Idaho has one of the fastest-rising populations of uninsureds in the country. It's recently been reported that over 221,000 Idahoans lack health care and at least 400,000 pay over 10 percent of their income on health care. Over 213,000 Medicare recipients fell into a regulatory bind where they have to wind up paying full price for their prescriptions. It would seem that being force to have health coverage is not the priority as much as being able to have health coverage.
