Current Georgia insurance issues as of February 2010
Georgia insurance affordability and availability issues will interesting to follow, given its political leanings.
Georgia is one of those red states that may want to consider becoming a blue state if only for the sake of more widespread health coverage. About 145400 Georgians lost health coverage in 2009 due to the economic downturn. Currently almost 20 percent of Georgians lack health coverage, which means that Georgia has the fifth-most number of uninsureds in the country. It's also been estimated that Georgians will pay 77 percent more on health care ten years from now if health care reform fails. Even so, you do have a prominent Georgia Tea Party that opposed health care reform and would like to enact legislation preventing a federal mandate to purchase health insurance. It's difficult to say that health care reform would be too costly and then oppose the mandate designed to ensure the millions of new customers that pay for it. However it's difficult to tell what the real sentiment is given the coverage that Tea Party news tends to get.
