Current Florida insurance issues as of February 2010

Florida insurance issues of availability and affordability will most likely be shaped by the current political climate.

You have to wonder about the sanity of Floridians for attacking Governor Crist. In 2008, he introduced a program, Cover Florida, which makes low-cost health insurance available to Floridians between the age of 19 and 64 who have been without insurance for at least six months or who are recently unemployed. Such a program would provide not only convenience to many Floridians but mercy. He was able to do this without tax dollars but with the partnership of private insurers. That he would be threatened by some smart-mouth demagogic upstart within his own party for hugging President Obama would make it seem that Floridians are incompetent to take care of their own self interest. Additionally, Cover Florida has not caught on either through lack of public awareness, unwillingness of brokers to sell it or slightly more expensive plans that are more comprehensive. The difference between Cover Florida and those plans is that it's does not disallow pre-existing conditions. For whatever reason, the nightmares that have affected health care in the rest of the country do not seem to weigh heavily on Floridians and the Tea Party sentiment is strong there. The result of the gubernatorial race between Charlie Crist and Marco Rubio should reveal just how good Floridians think they have it.
