If you reside in the District of Columbia and need District of Columbia health insurance, there are alternatives available to you. The District offers some similar options to what's offered in the states, however D.C. does not offer a "risk pool" for those who do not qualify for private plans because of pre-conditions. What is available are programs such as D.C. Healthy Families for kids in disadvantaged families and D.C. Medicaid.

Viper is a the name of a provider of health insurance coverage on a temporary basis. The coverage includes physician services and surgery in addition to outpatient and inpatient care. Benefits are covered in the event of an injury or illness which occurs during the time the insurance is in effect. Each individual covered under the plan has to first meet a deductible. Deductibles start at $250 and progress to $2500. The more your deductible, the less your premium. When the deductible is met, your plan covers any remaining cost at 100%.

Viper Health Insurance covers the member, their spouse and any dependent children under the age of nineteen. If the dependent child is a full-time student, the age increases to 25.

If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health insurance alternatives, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
