Current Delaware insurance issues as of February 2010
Delaware insurance issues pertaining to affordability and availability, have followed the national trend of being shaped by the current economy.
A recent report states that about 9000 Delaware families lost health insurance in 2009 due to an economic downturn. Delaware's unemployment rate has risen along with the rest of the country and for 2009, it was reported to be 7.7 percent. This state also faces challenges just resulting from the rising cost of health insurance. 183000 people under age 65 will have paid more than 10 percent of their income in 2009 for health insurance. This is not one of the biggest states in the country so these numbers reflect a healthy percentage of citizens. While Delaware may be a bit too small to generate the mind-blowing statistics of a state like California, the fact that the number of uninsured rose from 23000 in 2001 to 94000 in 2009 should serve as a canary in the coal mine for the rest of the country.
