Current Colorado insurance issues as of February 2010
Colorado insurance issues of affordability and availability have not been ignored, but as of February 2010, they have not been aggressively enough addressed for the most vulnerable residents in this state.
While Colorado faces some of the same precarious issues in health care as many states, where they stand out unfortunately, is in health issues regarding children. Colorado has a growing rate of child obesity, and ranks near the worst in the nation in numbers of children who do not receive medical or dental coverage. Additionally, nearly one in three Coloradans are report to go without health coverage for at least part of a year. While the largest group of the uninsured below age 65 are white, minorities and the working poor tend to be uninsured more often than whites.
Governor Ritter has pledged to make strides in covering all Coloradans and he has made some progress. He reports that 200,000 more people are now covered than at the beginning of his term. He plans to introduce more bills to make providing coverage more efficient and effective however he's also emphasized the importance of federal health care reform being passed before his state's problems are completely solved.
