Current California insurance issues as of February 2010
California insurance availability and affordability, as is probably no surprise, is under a thick cloud of economic uncertainty as of February 2010.
Everybody knows at this point that things are bad economically in California. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is now getting pummeled by some of the issues that he was opportunistically able to oust his predecessor on. California's budget crisis has been extensively covered, with its regular layoffs of state employees and having to resort to things like handing out IOUs to pay bills.
Unfortunately for the self-insured in California, things just got worse. Health insurance company, Anthem/Blue Cross, recently announced a thirty-nine percent rate for individual health policies. That's bad. It's bad not just for those in California but it's bad news nationwide. One recent article suggested that the insurance company did not want to raise rates so high, because of the bad publicity. Whether that's true or not, President Obama recently used that as an example of things to come if health care reform legislation is not passed. Hopefully something will be done. Although, California has historically had some extra health care safety nets for those without insurance, those cannot be depended upon as the state ponders bankruptcy.
