Current Arkansas insurance issues as of February 2010

Arkansas insurance issues, including affordability and availability, may be strongly influenced by lifestyle factors.

Arkansas was recently ranked as the 40th healthiest state in the country. This was an improvement. Some of the health problems that plague Arkansas include a high prevalence of smoking, obesity and preventable hospitalizations. I don't have any details as to what the major causes of the preventable hospitalizations are, but I figure that it must get a little wild in Arkansas sometimes. Some of this states' advantages regarding health include a low rate of binge drinking and a high rate of high school graduations. Although this is another conservative Southern state, which automatically means an anti-big government bias and a disdain for paying taxes, there are some signs of compassion. A law passed in 2009 mandating that insurance companies provide coverage for orthotics and prosthetic devices and services. The bad news for this state is that a recent poll shows that the majority of the population opposed health care reform. A combination of unhealthy living and rising premiums should result in increasted mortality and bankruptcy rates for this state in the near future.
