Oklahoma health insurance alternatives:

Everyone needs health coverage to cover their doctor’s visits and to provide protection in the event of health-related issues. If you’ve been having problems getting health coverage in Oklahoma, options are available from the state.

One is the OHRP, the state's high risk insurance pool. Many states have risk pools which are designed to provided coverage for those who are not able to obtain it privately because of pre-existing conditions. They are open to applicants who are HIPAA-eligible, meaning that they have had eighteen creditable months of coverage with at least the last day of it being from a group plan. To be HIPAA-eligible, you also need to have exhausted any COBRA benefits that you might have. The premiums for this program won't necessarily be cheap or affordable, so it should be seen as a last resort.

Oklahoma also has Soonercare, which is the state program to cover children under the age of 19 from families within specific income guidelines. These generally are families that fall between being able to afford private coverage and making too much to be eligible for Medicaid.

As with all states, Oklahoma offers Medicaid which is generally the only affordable option for families who are eligible for it.

If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health insurance alternatives, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
