Ohio health insurance alternatives:
Ohio is one of the few states that doesn’t have the luxury of heath insurance coverage when somebody gets denied by private insurance companies due to a pre-condition. So what alternatives does a fellow Ohio resident have for health coverage?
Someone living in Ohio that had insurance with a previous employer and opted for COBRA can still apply for coverage through HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). But to qualify the person must meet certain requirements to become what is known as a FEI (Federally Eligible Individual). First, a person must have 18 months of insurance coverage on record with a previous employer. Next, they must have used up all of their COBRA benefits. And finally, their insurance must not have been canceled due to not paying on a premium.
So in conclusion, there are options available for a person in Ohio seeking an alternative to private health insurance. The main determining factor is that you must have been covered by a prior employer and then it’s a matter of applying through HIPAA.
For families within certain income guidelines, children can be covered cheaply under a program called Health Start. Most states have programs like this and they are typically for families that make too much to be eligible for Medicaid (which Ohio also has) and cannot afford private coverage for every family member.
If you do not qualify for the low-cost/no-cost health insurance alternatives, you might have to consider a high-deductible/health plan. These are not cushy plans. If you have a health emergency, you will have to pay a high deductible before a coverage kicks in. Before you purchase one, you should try to set up a either a flexible spending account, a health savings account or a health reimbursement account so that you reap whatever tax benefits are available to you for footing the bill for your own insurance.
